Narrating Aftermaths: Post-War Sri Lankan Literature in English
Through an analysis of key works of post-war Sri Lankan literature in English, the paper highlights how the post-war nation is narrated in this work in relation to inclusivity, gender, sexuality and the law. The authors discussed (Romesh Gunasekera, Shyam Selvadurai, Jean Arasnayagam, Sunela Jayawardena) are both migrant and resident writers and the analytical approach draws on narrative, cultural and gender studies. Key questions asked are, how does location shape these postwar narratives? What genealogies of narration do they follow? What are the effects of narrating the nation in particular ways, and how astute can this literature be in its observations of post-war settlements?
